Councillors on the East Belfast working group at Belfast City Council have approved a proposal for a new Belfast Bikes Station on the Castlereagh Road, close to the Connswater Community Greenway. It received unanimous support from Green Party, Alliance, DUP , SDLP and UUP reps from the area and it is hoped that it will further encourage use of the greenway and active travel in the area. Read more: Belfast Bikes use plummets this year, councillors told Green Party Lisnasharragh councillor Brian Smyth said that he was delighted the proposal had been approved and hoped that further stations could be installed in the Cregagh Road and Ravenhill Road areas.

He said: “Delighted my proposal for a new Belfast Bikes station to be placed on the Castlereagh Rd next to the Connswater Greenway entrance was accepted. There was unanimous support from Alliance, DUP, and UUP reps on the East Belfast area working group. “I set out that it was an area of high footfall linked to nearby local businesses, and in the current economic climate, it’s vital to support local jobs.

There is evidence from London, that shows people who don’t drive and use neighbourhood shops spend 40% more each month. “Businesses are struggling to survive and we have got to look at different approaches and do everything we can to support them. “Going forward, I want to see new Belfast Bike stations on the Cregagh and Ravenhill Rds in the next couple of years.
