I’ve studied wine at WSET at both levels one and two, and I’ve been looking over the level three syllabus as I try to expand my knowledge. As a result I’m closely associated with wine by those who know me – and it’s not an uncommon gift to receive. This means that I usually have a few more bottles than I strictly need and have found it to be quite a challenge to actually get to drink them before they spoil.
There’s something really disappointing about having to pour a perfectly good bottle down the drain because you weren’t able to finish it all before oxygen got to it and made it taste. . .
not ideal. But my teacher at Wine and Spirit Education Trust told me about a handy gadget called the Coravin and said that it was a game changer when you’ve started to build your own wine cellar, so I decided to put it to the test. I got Coravin’s Timeless Six+ Mist set which is normally £379.
99 but has now dropped down to £219. 99, a staggering 40% off in an early Boxing Day sale. It contains the Six system which is said to keep still wines in high quality for weeks, months or even years.

I found it a little intimidating at first as an idea, but, once I’d used it for the first time I realised it’s actually really easy to use. The Coravin system works by releasing a layer of argon across the wine, this acts as a protective shield between the wine and any present oxygen which prevents it from oxidising and as a result spoiling.
Argon is an inert gas which doesn’t impact the taste of the wine. To test out the Coravin system, Jada used a bottle of Traces Sauvignon Blanc which is a French dry white wine that’s sealed with a cork (Image: Jada Jones) To test it out I used a bottle of Traces Sauvignon Blanc which is a French dry white wine that’s sealed with a cork. I also used the Aerator included in the Coravin set and was impressed by how easily it worked, most wines are best enjoyed once aerated, although we’re not always patient enough to let it breathe.
When using this you actually don’t have to let it breathe which is so handy, I was impressed to taste the notes in the wine effortlessly within seconds of it leaving the bottle. The set comes in a carry case which makes it all really easy to store and there are even special caps for screw capped wines. (Image: Jada Jones) There are other options, such as the Sensio Home Wine Keeper Wine Preservation System , however it only keeps wine fresh for a little over a month and doesn’t include an aerator.
You can get the Timeless Six+ Mist for £219. 99 now on the Coravin website. .
