Re: “ ” (Page A1, Sept. 16). Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao fired Chief Leronne Armstrong without an independent review of the charges against him.
This city has been in a chaotic crime spree ever since then. She should have waited for an independent review of the facts before removing him from his job. Chief Armstrong needs to be reinstated immediately.
It doesn’t matter that Thao doesn’t personally like him. He was doing a great job, and the majority of the citizens of Oakland had a lot of faith in him. Thao needs to resign.
Even if this were a city of 4,000 people instead of over 400,000 people, she doesn’t have the credentials for mayor. She has no idea how to run a city effectively. Missing out on money from the state for combating crime? Come on.
Thao is not qualified for her job. I was saddened and angry to learn that there was another death at Santa Rita Jail. No matter the reasons that brought an individual to jail, being in our county jail should not be a death sentence as it was for the latest person to die after being .
It is the responsibility of the Board of Supervisors to ensure that the county jail is safe and that adequate medical and psychiatric screening identifies those at risk for suicide, life-threatening medical conditions and violent behavior. We will not be able to reduce deaths in jail until we invest in community-based treatment facilities that provide an alternative to incarceration for the seriously mentally ill. We need to hold the Board of Supervisors, Alameda County Behavioral Healthcare, and the sheriff accountable for what happens inside our county jail.
Would an end to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine be finally resolved with a simple lease of Crimea? When the United States located its largest Marine base in Cuba (Guantanamo Bay), we did not withdraw when Cuba changed leadership to a pro-Russia government. Instead, the United States just continued to lease Guantanamo Bay from Cuba. Russia’s only open-water port (a base not frozen half the year) is Crimea, which is where Russia’s navy is based.
So, Russia cannot be expected to withdraw because Ukraine elected a pro-NATO government. So, if Russia simply uses its vast oil wealth to lease Crimea from Ukraine, will the war come to an end? Likely yes if Ukraine also agrees to not allow NATO forces within Ukraine — within shell firing distance of Russia’s navy base. Please policymakers, broker this simple lease solution to save lives and end Russia-Ukraine’s clearly resolvable quagmire.
Re: “ ” (Page A6, Sept. 6). I agree, that it is hatred that is tearing the country apart.
But it is not hatred for Donald Trump, it is the vitriol of Trump supporters toward everybody else. I don’t understand why Trump is not seen by his fans as he is in reality: a narcissistic, selfish, lying dictator wannabe who committed incredible crimes to cling to power. Every single indictment against him is based on truth.

As for the Republican Party today, it is a shame that decent members would rather retire than participate in this far-right, supremacist charade. I don’t hear anything about what they would do to better people’s lives; it is all about revenge and grievances — pathetic.
Joe Biden on the other hand managed to do a lot of good and stays out of the mudslinging. .
