Share to Facebook Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Apple’s decision to delay the launch of the M3 Apple Silicon into 2024, widely reported this week , leaves those looking for a new macOS laptop in a bit of a quandary. Apple’s choices have been disappointing in this regard.
Should consumers wait and see Apple’s offerings next year, or be satisfied with the current portfolio and invest a not-insignificant amount of money? HONG KONG, CHINA – 2022/09/08: Shoppers are seen testing and using American multinational technology . . .

Apple has a number of technical innovations coming to its laptop platform for the next generation.
Its investment in microLED display technology will start to reach consumer level laptops; there will be tighter integration between macOS and iPadOS that will require hardware changes, including the addition of a touchscreen to the package, new battery management technologies, and a more efficient chipset to increase battery power and performance. Any investment in the macOS ecosystem will miss out on all of these. The biggest question is one that needs to be answered personally and honestly.
Do you need one or want one? If you want one, the chances are you have a lot of Apple products bought in the first week, and you’re comfortable with that approach. If you need one and it has to be purchased in the near future, then you do have some solid options . At $999, the entry-level MacBook Air M1 may be down on specs compared to, well, every other macOS laptop, but the efficiency of the chipset should ensure a competent laptop experience for many years in the future; just be aware you are buying a machine which is approaching three years old in terms of hardware.
Those looking to balance power and pick up a larger screened laptop would be best placed to look at the refurbished 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros. These will pick up the M2 Pro and M2 Max chipsets – which should continue to outperform the M3 (much as the M1 Pro and M1 Max exceededing the M2). Even a new 15-inch M3 MacBook Air packs less punch than a refurb 14-inch M2 Pro MacBook Pro.

Some focus is returning to the macOS portfolio, with the known 2024 changes likely to be just some of the advances being prepared (even if those advances bring the MacBook hardware up to the same standard as Windows laptops over the last decade). Given that, it would be a courageous choice to do any major investments in the consumer MacBook family right now.
