I hope you’re getting a little extra time off from the daily grind to spend with friends and family! Time to fire up the barbeque and cook some delicious grub, and then ponder why they ever put a holiday so close to the beginning of the school year (though I suppose many schools go back after Labor Day—ours started three weeks ago!) In any case, Labor Day is one of those holidays we don’t think much about other than how it pertains to our extended weekend. The big County Fair runs through the weekend here. Similar events go on all over the country.

I think it’s an important holiday because it about as close as we come as a nation to celebrating socialism—or, at least, the labor movement and the importance of workers in a culture that typically only celebrates great wealth and success. I won’t get too deep into the weeds on this one as this is in no way a political column, but I always find it a bit surprising that we even have this holiday, though I’m certainly glad about it. Of course, the irony of the day is also the fact that while many people do have it off, it’s the laborers—grocery store workers, medical employees, gas station attendants, police, etc.

—mostly still have to work today, kind of like when everything was shut down for Covid, all the “essential workers” are out laboring (but at least the restaurants and theaters are open!) Okay, let’s Wordle! How To Solve Today’s Wordle The Hint: Sometimes this requires patience. The Clue: This word starts with a vowel. .

Wordle Bot Analysis After each Wordle I solve I head over to the Wordle Bot homepage to see how my guessing game was. Not a terrible guessing game today, though I’m always a little sad when I can’t cinch it in three. Oh well! I thought twine would treat me better, with all those common letters, but it only got me one ‘I’ in yellow.

From there, cloud helped slash 146 remaining solutions down to just 7, and I cut that back further to just 2 with diary. At this point, I could only come up with giddy, and fortunately it was the right answer. But Wordle Bot informed me later that biddy was also an option, and one I hadn’t even considered.

Huzzah! Today’s Score Another wash today. 0 points for guessing in four and 0 for tying the Bot. ZERO, ZILCH, NADA! Today’s Wordle Etymology The word “giddy” has an interesting etymology.

It can be traced back to Middle English and Old English forms: Middle English: In Middle English, “giddy” was spelled as “gidi” or “gidiȝ,” and it meant “mad” or “possessed by a spirit. ” It was used to describe a state of mental disorientation or dizziness. Old English: The Old English precursor to “giddy” was “gidig,” which also meant “mad” or “possessed by a demon.

” It is believed that “gidig” was derived from the Proto-Germanic word “gawidagaz,” where “ga” means “with” and “widagaz” means “sensation” or “motion. ” So, “gidig” referred to a state of being with a wild or agitated sensation, which evolved into the modern sense of feeling dizzy or lightheaded. Can you solve today’s phrase? Play Now Over time, the meaning of “giddy” shifted to describe a feeling of light-headedness, dizziness, or unsteadiness, especially when caused by excitement, frivolity, or lack of seriousness.

Today, “giddy” is used to describe a state of lightheartedness, joy, or excitement, often with a sense of being somewhat unsteady or unfocused due to the intensity of the emotion.
