Payton Washington, 18, was left with immense injuries after she, Heather Roth, 21, and two other Woodlands Elite Cheer Company teammates were allegedly attacked by Pedro Tello Rodriguez Jr.
, 25, in April after Roth made a simple mistake in an HEB parking lot. ‘My spleen was shattered. My stomach had two holes in it.
And my diaphragm had two holes in it. And then they had to remove a lobe from my pancreas. I had 32 staples,’ she told Good Morning America (GMA).
Washington posted photos of her injuries weeks after the incident, showing a long line of staples running the length of her stomach. The young woman, who graduated high school last weekend, said she doesn’t remember much about the incident as she was ‘actually texting and eating Twizzlers’ when the shots rang out. She went through intense rehab and still has trouble getting out of bed and standing by herself After Roth had come back to the right car, moments later Rodriguez would approach their vehicle and begin shooting after the cheerleader rolled down the window to apologize. ‘I didn’t think it was going to be as big of a deal as it was. She just kept saying: “I’m sorry, I’m sorry,” that was the last thing that was really said.
‘When I heard the first shot, I turned immediately with my blanket,’ she continued. ‘I didn’t know where it was coming from or anything, but it being so loud that my ears were ringing, I knew to turn and do something. ‘ The four girls eventually drove off to flee the raining bullets, but Rodriguez still managed to graze Roth with a bullet and hit Washington three times in her butt and back.
‘I saw blood on my passenger’s seat, so I knew somewhere I was bleeding, but I had so much adrenaline, I didn’t really know where,’ she said. ‘And then whenever we pulled over and opened the door, I was like: “Oh, got to throw up. ” And that’s when I was throwing up blood and I’m like: “Oh, that’s not normal.
” Roth (right) was grazed by a bullet, while Washington (left) was shot twice in the butt and once in the back Rodriguez was charged with a third-degree felony for deadly conduct. He has since been released on a $100,000 bail ‘And that’s when I knew something, somewhere was wrong. ‘ She was airlifted to the hospital in critical condition and had to have her spleen removed .
‘The hardest part was after the surgeries,’ she told GMA. She went through intense rehab and still has trouble getting out of bed and standing by herself. ‘It was hard … hurting to walk or stand is really weird when, a week before, you were doing a bunch of flips, running the track, and doing long jump, and all this stuff,’ she said.
Washington, who is set to attend Baylor University in the fall, is not allowing the incident to stop her. The young woman, who graduated high school last weekend, said she doesn’t remember much about the incident as she was ‘actually texting and eating Twizzlers’ when it occurred Washington is set to attend Baylor University in the fall and plans to return to tumbling in a few months Rodriguez began shooting after Roth (pictured) returned to the right car.
