Games ‘Squid Game’ Creator Making A Satire About The Success Of ‘Squid Game’ Paul Tassi Senior Contributor Opinions expressed by Forbes Contributors are their own. Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk, speaking to Deadline , has confirmed that he is making a new comedy called The Best Show on the Planet. The concept? It’s a satire that reflects on his experience being “thrust into the limelight” after Squid Game season 1 blew up on Netflix and upended his life by being one of the most-watched series in the history of televised entertainment (Netflix’s last numbers, 2.26 billion hours watched). Details on the project are light. It’s not clear if it would be a show or movie, on Netflix or not. This would of course be in addition to his current development of Squid Game season 2, something he never intended to make after taking nine years to sell Squid Game, but it is of course now mandatory with how well the first series performed. At least mandatory in this industry, when Netflix no doubt threw a check the size of the sun at him to produce more. It seems likely the process of feeling pressure to develop Squid Game 2 could even be a part of The Best Show on the Planet, as how can you possibly follow-up season 1 with such high expectations? That would be just over three years after the original aired, quite the gap in the streaming age, but it’s not surprising for this show in particular. The Deadline piece reconfirms that two of the only surviving characters, Gi-Hun and the Frontman, are returning for season 2. While I am eager to see a second season of Squid Game, I’m probably even more curious to see The Best Show on the Planet, as it seems like exactly the sort of thing that Hwang Dong-hyuk would be great at. At this rate, who knows, maybe we could actually see that out first. Netflix has continued to invest in Korean and global series in general in the wake of Squid Game’s success, but nothing, not Money Heist, Bridgerton, The Witcher, anything it has produced since fall 2021 has even come close to matching those kinds of insane viewership totals. I’m not sure anything else has even made it to half . No pressure, Hwang Dong-hyuk, I’m sure season 2 will be great. Follow me on Twitter , YouTube , Facebook and Instagram .
