Yet the figures are still bleak, with just 16% of respondents rating the state of the economy as “excellent” or “good,” a five-point increase from the previous poll, according to the survey of 800 voters conducted October 13-16 by Democratic polling firm Hart Research and Republican pollsters Public Opinion Strategies (margin of error +/-3.
5). Republicans hold a two-point advantage in wresting control of Congress, with 48% of voters saying they prefer the GOP and 46% who said they favor Democrats. About half of voters disapprove of Biden’s overall job performance and 56% said they disapprove of his handling of the economy.
Voters said they have more confidence in a Republican-controlled Congress to handle the economy versus Democrats, with respondents favoring the GOP, in most cases by double digit margins, when asked about six economic issues. Tangent Republican congressional candidates are tying their Democratic opponents to Biden’s low approval ratings in a number of key races. Biden has largely avoided battleground states this campaign season, including Georgia, Nevada and Ohio, and has instead focused his efforts on boosting his record on hallmark issues, including infrastructure improvements and student debt relief, while introducing new measures aimed at reducing gas prices–a key issue for voters. He is headed to Pittsburgh on Thursday, where he’ll campaign with Senate candidate John Fetterman and highlight infrastructure investments in a speech at the site of the Fern Hollow Bridge collapse.
