Montane The news released on September 14 that Patagonia founder Yvon Chouinard has given away his $3 billion outdoor clothing company to a pair of trusts—with a mandate to channel the 49-year-old company’s annual of profits of more than $100 million to the fight against climate change—has upped the eco philanthropy ante for all companies, but especially those operating in the same outdoorsy space. Outdoor equipment brands—with customers more likely to be socially eco-conscious than not—have long been greener than most.

For instance, the U. K. ’s Outdoor Industry Association works to ensure “every outdoor company [takes] bold steps to achieve positive impact [by] embedding sustainability into business” and “demonstrating measurable impact.

” One of the companies putting this into action is Montane, a British brand that has expanded globally in recent years. Montane has been marketing lightweight endurance clothing since it was founded in North East England in 1993. The company is now flagging its most planet-friendly products through its “More Sustainable Choice” initiative.

These products use a minimum of 50% more sustainable materials, including recycled content and organic cotton. The products are also more animal-friendly, with Montane using wool from sheep that have not had parts of the skin cut off without adequate anesthesia, a gruesome process known as mulesing, and filling their padded products with Responsible Down Standard (RDS) feathers from geese and ducks raised on farms with high welfare standards. According to Montane, consumers can review information about the fabrics used, relevant certifications, and product origins, helping them make more informed buying decisions. A company website filter enables customers to drill down into More Sustainable Choice products. The company plans to expand products meeting the criteria each season.

“We acknowledge that there is more to be done,” admits Montane’s corporate social responsibility manager Anna Pitman, “however, this criteria and additional product information sheds light on the materials we are using and the progress we are making. ” Montane’s existing sustainability agenda involves greater product longevity, supported by a repairs service.
