Got it! Jul 5, 2022, 09:42am EDT | Share to Facebook Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Destiny 2 Bungie Well it appears I accidentally threw a Molotov cocktail into the Destiny 2 community over the weekend when I published my “seasonal rut” video about how I wanted to see some formatting variety in seasons going forward. However, this soon got spun into a classic “DLCs versus seasons” debate, where some players believe that Destiny should go back to the era of Destiny 2 when we got sizable DLC releases without “drip fed content” like Curse of Osiris and Warmind, or in Destiny 1, The Dark Below and House of Wolves. This is not the argument I was making, and no, I do not think Destiny should do this, even though by now? I think they probably could.

Originally, Bungie said they were doing away with this model because it was simply not sustainable for their teams, which required too much work for everyone involved to the point of burnout, which no one wants to see. However, I think at this point Bungie has scaled up enough where I believe that we are actually getting more content than those DLCs offered. I would have previously said “without new patrol zones,” but as of this season, we’ve gotten that too with the return of the infected Leviathan.

Bungie has grown its Destiny team to a point where yes they probably could go back to DLCs of that size if they really wanted to. Destiny 2 Bungie But I don’t think they want to. And I don’t think most fans who think they want them to, actually want them to.

We should really not forget what Destiny used to be like during these eras. While yes, there was more content to play right at release, including story missions and strikes, this created yawning pockets of dead time throughout the year with truly nothing to do. The “dead time” usually feels like about a month, but before this? You could play probably 90% of Destiny DLC in the first few hours after release, and be baffled by what you were supposed to actually do after that. The “long term” content was limited to things like getting Osiris weapons or weekly Escalation Protocol drops, but that was more or less it. There is more meaningful content in the current seasonal mode more often now.

I would not suggest changing that. The main point I was making in my video was that the structure of how this seasonal content is doled out is becoming a little stale and I wish it was mixed up a little more. Every single season now we have some variant of the following: A new six player seasonal activity 2-3 new currencies to grind for rewards/focusing A thing in the HELM with three rows of boxes we have to upgrade weekly Weekly story missions for 6-8 weeks until they stop Two lore books with weekly page drops A seasonal artifact and season pass that must be grinded through A F2P seasonal event with a free weapon and a lot of microtransactions 2-3 exotic weapons, 3 exotic armors found in Lost Sectors 1 “secret” mission (sometimes) Destiny 2 Bungie The biggest change this year is the new “sold separately” aspect of two new dungeons, and now we are getting a reprised raid next season (probably King’s Fall).

But the formatting, the grind, feels really indistinguishable from season to season and that’s what I’m hoping to see refreshed a bit. Not that I want to move back to the DLC model and ditch seasons entirely. No way.

Anyway, there is zero indication Bungie would ever consider going back to that format, and seasons will continue indefinitely. I just hope they continue to evolve, not just in scope, but also in how they’re presented. Follow me on Twitter , YouTube , Facebook and Instagram .
