The bourbon will officially go on sale September 15th and the good news is you might actually have a chance to buy it. The distillery is making a total of 15,060 hand-numbered bottles of the celebratory whiskey and plans to sell bottles not only through select retailers but also through the distillery’s visitors center. Members of the public who are interested in snagging a bottle can enter the lottery between August 22-28 on Four Roses’ website .

Winners will be notified on September 7th, and will then have to physically go to the distillery in order to pick up their purchase. The bottle’s suggested retail price is $199, which is what you’ll pay for it at the Visitor’s Center if you do win that lottery. Given the small amount of bottles that are being made, it’s also a bourbon that’s bound to be worth a lot more if you hold off cracking it open.

Speaking of cracking it open, the distillery was nice enough to send me a small sample of the release — and you’re going to want to try it. On the nose, you get vanilla and oak as well as a little allspice and a hint of cinnamon. On the palate, there are delicious layers of honey as well as pear and berries and a bit of spice before you hit a not-long and smoother finish.

It’s a beautiful bourbon worthy of saving for special occasions. Brent Elliott, the Master Distiller then creates blends using those different recipes, which allows him the ability to not only maintain consistency across the distillery’s product lines but also create new and unique blends like the 135th Anniversary Limited Edition Small Batch.

The blend for this particular whiskey includes four different hand-selected bourbon recipes from the distillery. If you’re a Four Roses fan and not familiar with all of the recipes, the distillery’s website does a good job of breaking them all down . This blend starts with a 12-year and 16-year “OESV” recipe, which is known for its delicate fruit and caramel notes.

The O designates that the liquid was distilled at Four Roses. The E designates the mash bill, S notes it’s straight whiskey, and V identifies the yeast strain used. That whiskey is 75% corn, 20% rye, and 5% barley and uses the distillery’s yeast strain known for creating delicate fruit flavors.

Next is a 14-year-old OESK recipe, which is known for its baking spice flavor. That whiskey uses the same mash bill as the OESV, but a different yeast that gives it that spicy flavor. And finally, the blend includes 25-year-old OBSV, which is known for its delicate fruit and rare flavors.

That whiskey has a different mash bill than the other three, with 60% corn, 35% rye, and 5% barley, but the same yeast strain as the 12-year-old and 16-year-old whiskey used in the blend. “In crafting this blend, I wanted to create an elegant bourbon worthy of the brand’s heritage. Each of the 12-, 14-, and 16-year-old batches possess individual characteristics that complement each other perfectly,” Elliott said in a statement announcing the whiskey.

“Once the ideal balance of these three batches was achieved, I looked at several other batches of various ages and recipes to add an extra layer of nuance to the blend. Ultimately I selected the 25-year-old OBSV, which melds perfectly with the other batches and adds additional complexity and depth. ” The new bottle is dropping shortly after Four Roses’ recent brand refresh.

Long-time Four Roses fans will notice new packaging on the bottle that includes the brand’s new logo and an engraved rose cluster on the bottle’s cork. If you want to get that bottle for yourself, you have a few more days left to enter on the distillery’s website. Follow me on Twitter .
