Since the Vikings have running back Dalvin Cook, wide receivers Justin Jefferson and Adam Thielen along with high-priced quarterback Kirk Cousins ($35 million per season ), that ceiling is perceived to be quite high compared to the majority of the competition. However, O’Connell is not a defensive guru, as nearly all his experience – playing and coaching – is on the offensive side of the ball.

Since the Vikings were among the most disappointing defensive teams in the NFL the past two seasons, the team hired highly respected Ed Donatell to bring about improvement. Through the first three games, the results have been shaky. While the defense did an excellent job of limiting Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers in the season opener to 195 yards and no touchdown passes, that unit was torched by Philadelphia’s Jalen Hurts for 333 yards and a touchdown in Week 2.

Jared Goff of the Detroit Lions had an impressive Week 3 game against the Minnesota defense with 277 passing yards and a touchdown. While the Vikings were able to come away with a last-minute win over the Lions to raise their record to 2-1, the defense has registered two weak performances in a row, and it must start to show improvement if the Vikings are going to be legitimate contenders in the NFC. The secondary has been the biggest problem area on defense for years, and while the team has been hopeful about improvement in this area thanks largely to the drafting of rookie safety Lewis Cine and cornerback Andrew Booth last spring, that area may need significant time before it gets better.

Through the first three games, opposing wide receivers have been running free and easy through the secondary and rarely have seen any impediments. The Vikings have a pair of big-name defensive stalwarts in Danielle Hunter and Za’Darius Smith.

Hunter is coming off back-to-back injury-plagued seasons, but he is healthy in 2022. Smith, who starred for the Green Bay Packers, has also had injury issues in the past, but is close to 100 percent this season. The Vikings are counting on Hunter and Smith to provide consistent pressure on the quarterback from their position as edge rushers.

Both have strong track records of being game wreckers when they are healthy. Hunter had 14. 5 sacks in both 2018 and 2019, while Smith had 13.

5 and 12. 5 sacks in 2019 and 2020 for Green Bay. Hunter is being paid an average salary of $14.

4 million while Smith is earning slightly less at $14 million, and the results have been mixed. Hunter has just 1. 0 sack and two tackles for loss in the first three games, but he was able to pressure Goff on the final possession of the fourth quarter, and that played a key role in safety Josh Metellus intercepting the Detroit quarterback’s last desperation pass.

Smith has 2. 0 sacks and 5 tackles for loss and has been somewhat more effective than Hunter. The Vikings need more from both of those key performers, and they also need the run defense to step up.

The Eagles and the Lions had success with key first-down runs that allowed them to get ahead of the chains and dictate the pace of the game. While Hunter and Smith are expected to provide the primary impetus in the pass rush, they also have to contribute to the run defense. Linebackers Jordan Hicks and Eric Kendricks lead the team in tackles with 31 and 23, respectively, but if the defensive line can prevent some of the larger holes from being opened, those tackles will be made much closer to the line of scrimmage or in the backfield.

The Vikings offense has shown flashes of excellence but has not yet demonstrated consistency. When they face the New Orleans Saints in London October 2, Cousins and his wide receivers will be tested by an opponent that is searching for answers after losing its last two games to Tampa Bay and Carolina. Donatell’s defense needs to come up with a strong showing against an inconsistent New Orleans offense that has scored just 24 points in its last two games.

The defensive coordinator will be depending on his two high-priced pass rushers to demonstrate their talent and dominate against a struggling opponent. Follow me on Twitter . Check out my website .
