Do you remember the coercive lockdowns and health mandates that were enacted during the Covid pandemic in the interest of public health? Now we are being told that certain studies have concluded that Car-Free Sundays are a benefit for a “healthier population. ” The idea that Sunday is the official day of rest is being implanted into the minds of people today.
Car-free Sunday has two primary purposes. First, to encourage people to reduce the negative environmental effects created by driving cars, and second, to establish in society the idea that Sunday is the day for rest and relaxation. There is nothing wrong with encouraging people to exercise by walking, cycling, or riding a skateboard.
We should be participating in activities that improve our physical, mental, and emotional well-being. The problem with Car-free Sundays is that Sunday is being presented as the day to foster a sense of community by encouraging interaction, participation, awareness, increased business, cash profits, and temporal prosperity. Car-free Sunday is an obvious attempt to establish Sunday as a special day for the community.
