Noble Oak Whiskey On Way To Planting 1 Million Trees (One For Every Bottle)

Noble Oak Whiskey makes a claim on its bottleneck: Every bottle plants a tree. And yes, this author went out and bought (another) bottle just to make sure. And talked to someone at Noble Oak and a partner organization, One Tree Planted.

Noble Oak celebrated World Conservation Day in July, but likes to say it raises awareness (and a glass) to the environment all year long. They also ran a campaign for Earth Month in April. The company has been working with the nonprofit One Tree Planted since Noble Oak’s inception in 2017, planting more than 390,000 trees so far.

Another 145,000-plus trees are committed to planting projects already in progress and almost 35,000 trees are committed to projects planned but not yet started, says Jack Bauer, Noble Oak brand manager. “Our efforts have spanned from the Redwood Forest in California to Detroit, Michigan, to the Finger Lakes in New York, and everywhere in between,” Bauer says. You can see a map below, and on the company website .

Bauer says Noble Oak is growing (like a tree) and sales projections put them on track to have a total of 1 million trees planted or committed to be planted by the end of 2023. Noble Oak offers a Double Oak Bourbon and a Double Oak Rye. Each 750 ml bottle equals one tree planted.

Wood goes into each bottle, too. “As the first step in the process, Noble Oak whiskeys rest in charred new American White Oak barrels for a minimum of one year, developing sweet vanilla notes and a deep caramel tone,” Bauer explains. “As members of this Earth and the whiskey community, we want to make sure that both are sustainable and healthy.

The connection falls within the need for trees to support our global community and our whiskey community, therefore our goal is to give back—both in the glass and to the planet—more than we take. ” One year isn’t a long time for making a whiskey. How do they do it? The liquid has been recognized in competitions like Ultimate Spirits , San Francisco World Spirits and the SIP Awards.

Noble Oak whiskey is distilled in Indiana at a partner location and then sent to Ohio for finishing at Brain Brew Distillery , Bauer explains. They use a WoodCraft finishing process that replicates natural processes as whiskey barrels go from winter to summer and day to night. “The process activates the wood/bourbon interaction that is responsible for 70% of the whiskeys’ flavors with minimal waste and no chemicals, colors or additives,” Bauer says.

“WoodCraft finishing in its simplest form is wood, whiskey, heating and cooling. Basically, the same mechanism as barrel aging but with tighter quality control . .

. This is the same effect as distilleries moving barrels from heat at the top of the rick house to the cooling at the bottom. ” He compares it to espresso v.

drip coffee: Espresso uses heat and pressure to pull flavors out of coffee beans in a different way and on a different timeline than drip coffee. One Tree Planted say it’s planting trees in 30 different regions and counting across the United States. The types of trees planted are based on what’s native to the area.

The world is home to 60,000 different tree species . “We work with planting partners on the ground in these locations, who are members of the local communities and experts in what trees are beneficial to the local forest in terms of biodiversity and the human community,” says Ashley Lamontagne, forest campaign manager at One Tree Planted. “They help us to determine which trees should be planted for a successful restoration project.

” There are standards in place, the nonprofit says, to verify the plantings and how the trees are doing. Trees emit oxygen , as a reminder, so it’s important that they grow and thrive after planting. “This (verification) process includes thorough reporting and site photography provided from the partner for the first three years after planting,” Lamontagne says.

“We are also trialing drones and other technologies as they become available to determine how to scale these efforts. Satellite imagery plays an important role for monitoring forests into the future. This is an important part of our process to ensure that the trees we are planting survive and go on to create healthy forests.

” As an example, Noble Oak whiskey drinkers can take credit for trees planted in Minnesota’s Chippewa National Forest , where red and white pines make excellent nesting sites for bald eagles. Maybe they’ll add an American flag to the bottleneck soon. .
