The 18-year-old, who is currently on loan at Annan Athletic in Scotland, was involved in the incident on Thursday evening. He suffered serious injuries and was rushed to hospital, where he is currently recovering.

A statement from the Championship club said: ‘We can confirm that young professional Finlay Cross-Adair was involved in a road traffic accident on the A6 on the evening of Thursday 5th October. ‘Finlay suffered serious injuries as a result of the accident and is currently recovering in hospital. ‘The football club will show full support for Finlay and his family during his recovery. ‘We will be making no further comment until it is appropriate to do so. ‘ Cross-Adair made his senior debut for North End in October 2022 and appeared six times in all competitions last season.

He was subsequently awarded his first professional contract in December 2022. The 18-year-old regularly took part in first team training when he was at Preston and is a boyhood fan of the club. He shot to the attention of Preston manager Ryan Lowe after helping their youth team win a league and cup double in 2021-22.

Cross-Adair has scored once and added one assist in seven appearances for Annan, who currently lie eighth in the Scottish League One table, which is the third tier of Scottish football.
