Share to Facebook Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The Galaxy Z Fold 4 has a bigger screen than last year Samsung Samsung has launched the latest iterations of its folding phone – the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 – amid fresh questions over the longevity of its flexible screens. The Z Fold 4 is joined by the Galaxy Z Flip 4 in Samsung’s revamped line-up, which renews the company’s commitment to devices with folding screens. Potential buyers will obviously be keen to know how long those folding screens will last, with Samsung claiming that the screens in both devices have been certified to fold up to 200,000 times.

Assuming the phone is used for three years, that means you should be able to flip it open and shut 182 times a day, which should be enough for even the most serious smartphone addict. However, questions have been raised over the durability of the screen protector that Samsung installs on its foldable devices. Air bubbles under the screen protector A report published on Engadget earlier this week claimed that many customers are experiencing problems with air bubbles appearing under the screen protector after only a few months of usage.

“For the first six months I had it, my Z Fold 3’s screen was pristine,” wrote Engadget’s Sam Rutherford. “There were no blemishes, bubbles or anything. But then one winter day while I was walking down the street, I opened the phone and heard a crack.

At first, I feared the worst, thinking its exterior cover screen had shattered or something important inside had broken. But upon closer inspection, I noticed there was a fine line running down the middle of the phone near the crease, as if the protector had been pulled or stretched. ” MORE FOR YOU Google Issues Warning For 2 Billion Chrome Users Forget The MacBook Pro, Apple Has Bigger Plans Google Discounts Pixel 6, Nest & Pixel Buds In Limited-Time Sale Event Those bubbles have expanded into a clearly visible “air gap that runs down the entire middle of the screen”.

Rutherford claims that when he took the phone into a Samsung store for repair, he was told by a Samsung Care+ rep “that this was a somewhat widespread issue, saying that screen protector replacements are the most commonly requested repair for Samsung’s foldables”. Other Z Fold 3 customers have reported similar problems. This is just one of several Reddit threads I found with customers reporting issues with the screen protector “bubbling and lifting”, with varying experiences over whether Samsung charged for the screen protector to be replaced, even when the phone is under warranty.

Some customers report they’ve simply removed the screen protector themselves and the phone has continued to work normally, although such action might invalidate the manufacturer’s warranty. Both the Fold and the Flip 4 are powered by the Snapdragon SM8475 processor and both have a 4,400mAh battery. The Fold can be used with Samsung’s S Pen devices for those who prefer to doodle on that big, wide screen with a stylus. Both models go on sale today.
