Consequently the Moon’s northern limb—which will be closest to the center of Earth’s shadow—became rather dark during totality. The opposite happens this week when the Moon travels—for 85 minutes—through the northern half of Earth’s shadow. It should be a tad brighter this time around.

Either way, it means a very early start for many people in North America. Will it be worth it? Absolutely! Besides, the next total lunar eclipse visible from anywhere isn’t until 2025. Tuesday, November 8, 2022: A total lunar eclipse beside Uranus Since November’s full Moon is sometimes known as the “Frosty” or “Beaver” Moon lookout for some epic names for this, the final total lunar eclipse for a few years.

will witness a totally eclipsed moonset in the western sky while everyone else in the country will be able to see the entirety of totality in the southwestern sky. Wednesday, November 9, 2022: Moon and the Pleiades Go outside a couple of hours before midnight and look to the east and you’ll see a bright 97%-lit waning gibbous Moon just below the sparkling open star cluster of the Pleiades (also known as the “Seven Sisters”).

Thursday, November 10, 2022: Moon and Mars in the ‘horns’ Look east a couple of hours before midnight and you’ll see a 92% illuminated waiting gibbous moon next to the red planet. Brightening as it gets towards its biannual opposition in early December, Mars is directly between two stars called Elnath and Tianguan—the two “horns” of Taurus, the bull, right above.
