She married newspaper editor Phil Bronstein in 1998 and, unable to have children because Stone had contracted an autoimmune disease, they adopted a son. Bronstein divorced Stone in 2004, citing irreconcilable differences, and he was given primary custody of their child, Roan. Stone later adopted two more boys.
