While the fourth quarter saw a glimmer of hope with a slight improvement, the overall picture remains bleak, with major players experiencing significant losses. It hasn’t been a good couple of years for the likes of Lenovo, Apple , Dell and others. The PC market continued its downward spiral in 2023, marking the second consecutive year of decline since the pandemic-fuelled surge.

According to a report by IDC, global shipments plunged 13. 2% compared to 2022, with a total of 259. 5 million units shipped.

While the fourth quarter saw a glimmer of hope with a slight improvement, the overall picture remains bleak, with major players experiencing significant losses. Despite the overall contraction, some brands managed to navigate the headwinds. Lenovo, the market leader, shipped 59 million units in 2023, maintaining a steady 22.

7% market share. While the Chinese company faced a slight dip compared to 2022, their consistent performance solidified their dominance. HP Inc.

followed closely behind, shipping 52. 9 million units and capturing a 20. 4% market share.

Although the growth slowed, HP managed to gain ground in the market. Rounding the top 5 are Dell, Apple and Asus. Dell Technologies suffered a significant dip, with shipments plunging 19.

6% to 40 million units and its market share shrinking to 15. 4%. Dell did suffer quite a bit as it showed the steepest decline among major brands, as per IDC.

Apple and Asus also faced double-digit percentage drops in both shipments and market share. Apple shipped 21. 7 million units in 2023, down from 27.

9 million the previous year, while Asus saw shipments fall from 20. 5 million to 16. 8 million.

The premium segment, where these brands play a strong role, appeared particularly vulnerable to economic headwinds and changing consumer preferences. The “Others” category, encompassing smaller manufacturers, mirrored the overall trend with a 13. 6% decline in shipments.

This suggests that the challenges were not limited to specific players but the overall market. However, IDC does estimate that 2024 will see the revival of the PC market.
