This week Snap laid off 1200 employees, 20% of its workforce. Teams working on games inside Snapchat, Zenly, the social mapping app Snap bought in 2017, and Snap’s hardware division, which is responsible for its AR Spectacles glasses and the Pixy camera drone, which was canceled after being introduces a few months ago.

Verge editor Alex Heath, who wrote this Snap piece, said on the “This Week in XR” podcast two weeks ago that he finds it ironic that Apple’s policy change hurt two companies that may compete with its upcoming XR device. Despite present troubles, Snap co-founder and CEO Evan Spiegel said his camera-first company will continue to focus on AR. The 37 Founding Companies in Jun2 2022.
