Let’s dive right in: 306 AD: Constantine I was proclaimed Roman emperor by his troops in Eboracum (modern-day York, England). He would later become known as Constantine the Great.

The battle would result in a British victory, but both Wolfe and the French commander, General Montcalm, were killed.

1795: The French government approved the “Metric System” as the country’s standard system of weights and measures. 1861: The United States Congress passed the Crittenden-Johnson Resolution, stating that the Civil War was being fought to preserve the Union and not to end slavery. 1909: French aviator Louis Blériot made the first flight across the English Channel in a powered aircraft, flying from Calais, France, to Dover, England.

1943: Benito Mussolini, the former fascist dictator of Italy, was dismissed from power and arrested after the fall of his regime during World War II. 1952: Puerto Rico became a self-governing commonwealth associated with the United States after its constitution was approved by the U. S.

Congress. 1978: Louise Brown, the world’s first baby conceived through in vitro fertilization (IVF), was born in Oldham, England. 2000: Air France Flight 4590, a Concorde supersonic aircraft, crashed shortly after takeoff from Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport, killing all 109 passengers and crew on board and four people on the ground.
