Wordle, which launched over two years ago, remains one of the biggest word puzzle games out there and a fun daily challenge for those of us who like any excuse to keep our wits sharp. A Wordle a day keeps the doctor away, as they say.

The word game, created by Josh Wardle, was purchased by The New York Times after it exploded in popularity in 2022. Since then, it’s fallen off a great deal compared to other games like the NYT’s but it remains a force to be reckoned with and I continue to write these guides every single day—even when I’m sick or in the emergency room! And people say I’m afraid of commitment! On that note, let’s solve this Wordle! . .

. Today’s Wordle Wordle Bot Analysis A massively lucky day for me. It’s funny, I was on a hike with my parents yesterday and the word was brought up as a better word than (and sort of a halfway point between that word and Wordle Bot’s current fave, ).

So I figured, why not use that today and lo and behold it turned out to be a great word, though not as good as would have been, since that would have snagged me an ‘L’ as well. I could think of a few words at this point but didn’t know I only had 6 remaining. and all came to mind (Wordle Bot guessed for its second guess, reminding me of the novel by Ursula K.

LeGuin). I almost guessed because and atonement and redemption were on my mind, but it didn’t feel right. Three vowels in a word is kind of rare, and so I debated between and and decided was the most likely choice.

Lucky for me, it was right! I make up for yesterday’s lost point and then some today. I get 2 points for guessing in two and 1 point for beating Wordle Bot, who guessed in three. Lucky me, I get 3! Huzzah! The word “table” has an interesting etymology, tracing back through several languages and cultures.

Its immediate origin is in the Old English word “tabule,” which came from Latin “tabula,” meaning a board, plank, or flat piece. The Latin word itself likely has roots in earlier Proto-Indo-European languages. “Tabula” in Latin was used in various contexts, often referring to a flat slab or plank used for writing on or for games.

It also had broader meanings, including “list” or “chart,” due to the flat nature of the surfaces on which such information was displayed or written. Over time, as the word evolved through various languages, including Old French, the meaning shifted to refer more specifically to the type of furniture we recognize today as a table – a flat surface supported by legs, used for eating from, writing on, or holding objects. This transformation in meaning reflects both the evolution of language and the development of furniture and domestic habits through the centuries.
