Electrical Safety First hopes its recommendations to regulate the resale of batteries will “stem catastrophic battery fires”. The report has been published less than a month after a woman and two children were killed after a fire ripped through their home in Sackville Close.
Cambridge Fire and Rescue Service said that the fire was most likely caused by an e-bike stored in the maisonette. Electrical Safety First is now calling for batteries from e-bikes and e-scooters to be regulated in a similar way to fireworks and heavy machinery. The move would mimic laws in New York City.

This unique type of fire requires special measures to tackle the increasing problem. ” “The UK should give serious consideration to following in the footsteps of New York City and better regulate lithium-ion batteries.

The new recommendations would mean that a third party would be required to approve the battery as safe. A fully charged e-bike battery can release a similar amount of energy as the explosives in six hand grenades, according to the charity.
