Season 4’s premiere airs today on HBO after a two year hiatus. The world has changed a great deal since the show’s third season aired. The Season 3 premiere came out in March of 2020, just before everything came screeching to a halt.
Schools and businesses shut down due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, and everything went to hell even more spectacularly than in the fiction of Westworld. In other words, it’s been a long time since we’ve watched this show and a lot has happened since then, so you probably ought to brush up on the first three seasons before diving in. HBO has its own Season 1-3 recap which you can watch below: One of my favorite recap YouTubers, Man of Recaps, has a more detailed recap of Season 3 which you should also definitely watch before tonight’s premiere: MORE FOR YOU ‘Demon Slayer’ Season 2 Finally Has An Actual 2021 Release Date Netflix’s ‘Squid Game’ Season 2 Not A Sure Thing, Says Director ‘Genshin Impact’ Still Refuses To Increase Anniversary Rewards, Despite Fan Outcry You can also watch his Season 1 and 2 recaps here.
Season 3 was a pretty massive departure from the first two, as our heroes left the park entirely and struck out into the real world. Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood) was set up as an antagonist to Jeffrey Wright’s Bernard Lowe, though the real conflict ended up being a showdown between Dolores and secretive corporate mogul Serac (Vincent Cassel). Dolores, of course, actually split her identity between her own rebuilt body and a robot version of Charlotte Hale (Tessa Thompson).
The real world is a near-distant future version of our own ruled over by a predictive AI quantum supercomputer called Rehoboam which essentially automates society, placing people in jobs and imposing order on all human affairs. I found Season 3 at once compelling and a bit messy. It was cool to see the world outside the park, but in many ways it felt like an entirely new show because of it.
The introduction of Caleb (Aaron Paul) gave us a new human perspective in a show that is increasingly dominated by robots, and Serac was a great villain. But I still find myself wondering if going past Season 1 was a wise choice for Westworld. Perhaps creating an anthology series, with new characters and scenarios each season, would have been a better choice.
But Season 4 may convince me otherwise. I’ll have my review of Season 4’s premiere up later this evening, so be sure to follow me here on this blog as well as on Twitter or Facebook . Follow me on Twitter .
