Kisan Diwas also commemorates the birth anniversary of Chaudhary Charan Singh, the former Prime Minister of India who is also known as the ‘champion of India’s peasants’ for his exemplary role in improving the condition of farmers in Uttar Pradesh and beyond.
In recent years, the central government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has introduced several schemes for the welfare of the farmers. In this article, we will take a look at the many farmer schemes that the central government has introduced. The farmer schemes of the central government Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana has been introduced to supplement the farmers’ financial needs in procuring various inputs to ensure proper crop health and appropriate yields, commensurate with the anticipated farm income.
Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana The Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana was launched on July 1, 2015, to expand cultivated areas with assured irrigation, reduce wastage of water and improve water use efficiency. Also, the scheme ensures protective farming by channelling the rainwater at the micro-level for agriculture. Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana The central introduced the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana to provide financial aid and insurance coverage to farmers if the cultivation and production of a notified crop is affected by pests, diseases and natural calamities.
The scheme provides stability to the farmers’ income and encourages them to take up modern and innovative farming methods. Group Fisherman Accidental Insurance Scheme Fishing in the sea is a very dangerous occupation as nobody can predict for sure how it will behave and what natural calamity it has in store. Every year, several fishermen lose their lives to the sea which leaves his family struggling and trapped in poverty.
Hence, the central government has introduced this scheme to protect the families of the fishermen. Soil Health Card Scheme This scheme was launched in 2015 to help the state government issue Soil Health Cards to farmers. It informs farmers about nutrition in the soil and recommends the appropriate dosage of nutrients they can apply to improve the fertility of the soil.
Primary Agricultural Credit Societies The Union Ministry of Co-operation has formulated a plan to establish viable Primary Agricultural Credit Societies all over India to provide farmers with the required forward and backward linkages to market their produce, enhance their income, and obtain credit facilities and other services at the village level itself. Those primary cooperative societies which cannot be revived will be identified for winding up, and new primary cooperative societies will be established in their area of operation. PM Programme for Restoration, Awareness Generation, Nourishment and Amelioration of Mother Better known as PM PRANAM, this scheme provides incentives to the states and Union Territories to promote alternate fertilisers and use chemical fertilisers in a balanced way.
A total of Rs 1451. 84 crore has been approved for Market Development Assistance (MDA) for promoting Organic Fertilisers from Gobardhan Plants. This scheme aims to restore the health of the soil and reduce input costs for farmers.
Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samruddhi Kendras There are over one lakh Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samruddhi Kendras in India. These have been established for the farmers’ convenience, to provide them with farm inputs and ensure a one-stop solution for all their needs. Introduction of Sulphur coated Urea (Urea Gold) For the first time, the Indian government has introduced sulphur-coated Urea (Urea Gold) in the country.
It is more economical and efficient than the currently used Neem-coated Urea. It helps to solve the sulphur deficiency in the Indian soil. Also, it saves farmer’s input costs and raises their incomes with enhanced productivity.
