Got it! Jul 14, 2022, 09:20am EDT | Share to Facebook Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin PS Stars Sony Sony has revealed a new loyalty program it’s calling PlayStation Stars, joining its grand overhaul of PS Plus tiers form earlier this year. But unlike those, this new program is free, and just requires you to own a PlayStation, play PlayStation games, and participate in the occasional community event for further rewards. Among the things you will do to earn currency within PlayStation Stars is: Do a “monthly check-in” which just means you have played any PlayStation game that month.

Others will ask you to win tournaments set up for this program. Complete specific trophies. Or there are hyper, hyper specific rewards, like being the first player to platinum a blockbuster title in your time zone.

Competitive! Rewards will include PSN wallet funds and some PlayStation Store products. And when you buy PlayStation games, you will be earning PlayStation Stars points if you’re signed up. Then we get to…whatever this is.

A component of PlayStation Stars called “digital collectibles”: “Also, as part of PlayStation Stars, we are unveiling a new type of reward called “digital collectibles. ” Collectibles are as diverse as our portfolio of products and franchises. They are digital representations of things that PlayStation fans enjoy, including figurines of beloved and iconic characters from games and other forms of entertainment, as well as cherished devices that tap into Sony’s history of innovation.

There will always be a new collectible to earn, an ultra rare collectible to strive for, or something surprising to collect just for fun. ” A whole bunch of the language in there sounds like it could be describing something akin to an NFT, without calling it that specifically. However, I’m leaning toward the notion that this is not that, and more an evolution of sorts of the trophy system that has nothing to do with the blockchain.

This is a free program, so there would be no need to assign value to these collectibles, and nothing written here seems to indicate they can be traded or sold. They talk about an “ultra rare collectible to strive for” which does not sound like an NFT that could be transferred. Rich Forbes Staff The Bestselling Nanit Pro Smart Baby Monitor Is $90 Off For Prime Day By Lex Goodman Contributor Update : As soon as I published this, I found Sony being quick to clarify these are not NFTs, via The Washington Post: “It’s definitely not NFTs. Definitely not. You can’t trade them or sell them.

It is not leveraging any blockchain technologies and definitely not NFTs. ” Well that’s a relief. Since that’s all cleared up, this program just sounds…like fun! Loyalty programs are cool when they’re rewarding, and if this lets you amass PS Wallet funds by doing in-game stuff, that’s kind of neat, and if these non-NFT collectibles are cool enough and could be displayed on your profile or something, that sounds like it could be a fun badge of honor for players to try to earn.
