News, on Quora : I have many clients who now work remotely at least part of the time. Here are some thoughts that may be helpful. I’ve seen many people come to embrace remote work.

That’s true even of some people who used to prefer the office. They used to prize getting dressed up, coming to a place that is more peaceful and respectful than home, and valued the workplace’s social aspect. But many such people have come to appreciate remote work’s flexibility, freedom from a stressful commute, and lack of a fire-breathing boss ever looking over their shoulder.

Working remotely does require special skills: First, there are the obvious things. You need to be: Self-motivated: You won’t have that boss monitoring you as closely. In control of distractions: the demanding child or partner at home, the temptations of the screen, and “Let’s play hooky and go shopping and to lunch.

” Zoom-competent: Positioning the camera so it’s mainly a head-and-shoulders shot without shadows on your face and with a work-acceptable background. If yours isn’t, use a Zoom background. More important, get good at being engaged but relaxed in front of a webcam.

Being willing to ask questions but not so many that you’re high maintenance. More questions are likely to arise in remote work than when an answer is sitting in the next cubicle.

The art of networking and socializing remotely, for example, after a staff meeting, asking someone to chat with you.
