Share to Facebook Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Destiny 2 Bungie Yesterday, I made a video talking about how I’m feeling a bit burned out with Destiny 2 right now, something that usually does not happen to me, even with how much I play. While not everyone feels this way presently, I did hear from a lot of people about one issue in particular, that the same-y format of the seasonal model is getting a bit stale. I think Bungie has done a great job with the aesthetics, narrative and size of content with its Destiny 2 seasons, especially in the last year and a half or so.
But it is also married to a model that is starting to feel overly predictable. And not just that, like we’re grinding for essentially the exact same things each and every season. Here are the ingredients that just…never really change: A 100 rank battle pass with relatively little of interest inside it, other than a new exotic and cosmetic armor set.
A 5 row artifact that will unlock assorted champion mods and build-altering boost mods. A station in the HELM for the season which is three rows of timegated upgrade boxes, unlockable only by playing week to week, tied to increasing farming efficiency for the season. A six player matchmade activity that will be the primary farming focus of the season.
Occasionally, three player, sometimes both (Plunder). A weekly story mission to run and a few dialogues between characters which add about 5-10 minutes of narrative a week, over 6-9 weeks. Destiny 2 Bungie Six seasonal weapons that require five patterns each to craft.
Three new playlist random drop weapons and a ritual weapon. A couple new or usually reprised weapons added to Trials and Iron Banner. Three exotic pieces of armor to farm in Lost Sectors.
Two weapon exotics, though lately only one is tied to the season, the other to the dungeon or raid. A dungeon or raid, though the dungeons are sold separately and can’t technically be counted as part of the season. A seasonal holiday event focused on new currency collection and Eververse items and one weapon.
If we are very lucky, some sort of re-runnable exotic mission like Presage or Vox Obscura. As I said, the volume of what Bungie is producing here is substantial, but the format is getting so repetitive that I literally just made a list of 13 things and I’d say 11-12 of them are a guarantee each and every season.
That alone is making all these seasons feel like they kind of blend together, and also like your progress is being reset. Finish unlocking those rows of boxes? Time for a new row of boxes. Finish a +25 power grind? Time for a new +25 power grind to be GM ready a few weeks after season launch.
Destiny 2 Bungie I understand that few games have been able to produce live content at the pace that Bungie has, and that an “assembly line” system may be part of the reason they’re able to do that. But even if I’m impressed by the pacing, the content and format of the seasons themselves really does feel like it’s starting to go stale. For me, the most exciting bits of the past year have been the 3.
0 sandbox updates, something free from that entire list. Maybe nothing needs to change. Destiny is still popular and well-played and doing just fine.
I know the world doesn’t revolve around me and my tastes. Though I do think I’m not alone in feeling the burn, and approaching each new seasonal reset with something sort akin to exhaustion, given everything we’re having to re-do each time. Follow me on Twitter , YouTube , Facebook and Instagram .
