Share to Facebook Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Elle Fanning Kojima We are in the midst of the Great Consolidation, where megacorps are scooping up independent publishers left and right, no matter their size. Microsoft is trying to push its purchase of Activision Blizzard through after its already bought Bethesda, Obsidian, Ninja Theory and others. Sony has added Bungie to its in-house roster and is hungry for more.
But while sure, I can see an era where places like Ubisoft, Square Enix and even Take Two are sold off to some tech giant or another, there may be one man who stands alone: Hideo Kojima. According to Kojima himself, he has been pitched multiple offers for Kojima Productions, his studio that he founded after his split from Konami. Here’s what he said on his recent Brain Structure podcast about his potential acquisition, or lack thereof: “Let me reiterate that we are indies,” he said.
“We have no affiliations whatsoever and we are not backed by anyone. And every day I am approached by offers all over the world to buy our studio. Some of those offers are ridiculously high prices but it’s not that I want money.
I want to make what I want to make. That’s why I created this studio. So as long as I’m alive, I don’t think I will ever accept those offers.

Clearly, he’s just fine working with major industry players.
He developed Death Stranding with Sony and a sequel is likely on the way. Microsoft has announced a collaborative game as well. But Kojima Productions selling out to be purchased wholesale by Microsoft, Sony, Embracer, or any of these other third parties buying publishers? I mean, he said it, “So long as I’m alive, I don’t think I will ever accept those offers.

While we may see exclusive games from him on different platforms, that’s the business, but it doesn’t necessitate his studio being owned outright by someone who isn’t him. And yet, in this industry, I have also learned to never say never, and even he’s leaving a tiny door open with his “I don’t think ” phrasing.
But I doubt it, given what we know about him, and the kinds of games he’s going to want to make the rest of his life with total independence. Follow me on Twitter , YouTube , Facebook and Instagram . Subscribe to my free weekly content round-up newsletter, God Rolls .
