Share to Facebook Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Taking a look back at another week of news and headlines from Cupertino, this week’s Apple Loop includes Apple confirming launch event details, fast charging on the iPhone 14 Pro, the surprising iPhone 14 price, new MacBook Pro launch date, the return of the Mac Pro, Apple Watch leaks, FlickType court case resolved, and replacing the lightning cable.

Apple Loop is here to remind you of a few of the very many discussions that have happened around Apple over the last seven days ( and you can read my weekly digest of Android news here on Forbes ). Apple Confirms Launch Event, What Can We Expect To See? Next week’s Apple event will be packed with product launches from a number of categories, but as always, the iPhone will be both the star of the show and the biggest financial contribution to Apple’s revenue as a whole. What can we expect? Let’s start with the highly-anticipated iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max: “Apple will, of course, reveal the brand new iPhone 14 in September, but the standard model likely won’t be the star of the show.

The iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max are expected to carry the bulk of the new and exciting features. There are three big features expected in the 14 Pro and Pro Max: an always-on display (a feature Android phones have had for years); a 48-megapixel rear camera with a larger sensor; and a screen that gets rid of the notch in favor of smaller camera cutouts. ” ( The Verge ).

The comparison doesn’t stand up to the Android space, where 100W rapid charging is commonplace and some handsets supporting up to 240W.

But it’s an advance for the iPhone, albeit one that has potentially reached its limits: “The bad news, however, is there are a lot of caveats. DuanRui says 30W fast charging will be limited to iPhone 14 Pro models, a surprise considering previous leaks claimed it was coming to the whole range. The leaker also reveals the limitations of Lightning, saying the peak power of the interface is restricted to “only 27W (9V 3A), and 14.

5V cannot be used. ” ( Forbes ). iPhone Prices Up And Down The other big question on the new iOS-powered smartphones will be the price.

There’s a general acceptance that the price will be rising this year, supply chain issues, the general economic wind, and a need to maintain margins; but how much will the price be going up? Not everything needs to go up by the same amount. Indeed one tipster suggests that the iPhone 14 may be seen as a price cut, replacing the iPhone 13 Mini at $699. A closer look at the specs may show some economy of scale and lower parts, but the headlines of ‘price cut’ would be welcomed by Tim Cook and his team: “So it is not unreasonable for Apple to price the iPhone 14 at $699, pegging the range to the same entry-point as the iPhone 13 Mini.

Above this, a $799 iPhone 14 Max would sell like hotcakes, and Apple would successfully widen the gap between iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro to $300. This aligns with the company’s attempts to increase differentiation between Pro and non-Pro models. ” ( Forbes ).

Will The New MacBook Pro Arrive Early? Thanks to the early launch of the M2 MacBook Air and MacBook Pro at this summer’s WWDC, Apple’s traditional MacBook launch at its late October event has a tantalising possibility backed up by details from the supply chain. The high-end 14-inch and 16-Inch MacBook Pro laptops may be refreshed with m2 technology as early as next month. “It now looks like Apple has an option to bring the larger MacBook Pro laptops to the market before the end of 2022, presumably with the M2 Pro and M2 Max variants of the Apple Silicon chipsets.

Assuming Apple continues the tradition of a late-October or early-November launch event, this would be the prime time to announce these new MacBooks. ” ( Forbes ). The Mac Pro Is Finally Back What about Apple’s October event? This is perhaps more interesting.

As well as the aforementioned MacBook Pro update, Apple still has one Mac left to move to Apple Silicon before the end of the year. The Mac Pro: “[Mark Gurman reports] Apple is gearing up to release “M2-based versions of the Mac mini, Mac Pro, and MacBook Pro” over the next few months. This means an updated Mac mini model and new Mac Pro is in the cards, and it makes sense seeing as Apple’s senior vice president of hardware engineering, John Ternus, stated that a new Mac Pro was in the works during the Mac Studio announcement.

This means the end of Intel chips in Apple products is in sight. ” ( Laptop Mag ). Just Click Your Apple Watches Together Three Times.

. . Good news for Apple Watch fans, not only is Apple preparing the updated Apple Watch Series 8 for launch alongside the iPhone 14, not only are stock levels looking healthy so no delay is expected, but it’s also going to come with… a new shade of red! “In a tweet earlier today, ShrimpApplePro said that the Apple Watch Series 8 will continue to be available in 41mm and 45mm casing sizes, just like the Apple Watch Series 7.

Adding to a previous report about the Apple Watch Series 8 ‘s color options, the leaker said that the device’s (PRODUCT)RED option will be a “new shade of red. ” ( ShrimpApplePro via MacRumors ) FlickType Court Case Comes To An End Last year’s court case by Kosta Eleftheriou against Apple regarding the former’s FlickType keyboard, its removal from the Apple App Store, and the subsequent appearance of similar third-party apps has come to a close: “Following the filing of the case last year, the two parties participated in court calls with a judge, the court docket shows, including as recently as this spring. A request for dismissal of the lawsuit was subsequently filed on July 21, 2022, after Apple and Kpaw (Eleftheriou’s business) came to an agreement.

Eleftheriou was unable to comment on the terms of the settlement. Apple was not immediately able to comment on the dismissal either. ” Eleftheriou is a strong advocate for developer rights in the App Store, and continues to highlight developer scams on consumers and Apple’s poor developer relations: “Just the other day, I re-ran my scam-finding tool and was able to find several new scam apps within five minutes, and this clearly affects users and developers alike.

” ( TechCrunch ). And Finally Ten years ago Apple introduced its proprietary lightning cable system. On the anniversary of the white port that continues to be a lightning rod for discussion, Mitchell Clark argues it is time for the cable to be retired: ” Every iPhone still comes with a Lightning cable, and the cable remains a reliable method for charging devices and connecting to accessories and cars.

But as Lightning approaches its 10th birthday, I, and many others, are ready for Apple to close the book on this connector and introduce a sea change in how we charge our phones. It’s not because Lightning’s technically outdated; it’s because another port has outdone it in one key area — ubiquity. ” ( The Verge ).
