(Photo by Gareth Cattermole/Getty Images for Disney) Getty Images for Disney Superheroes have dominated the pop culture landscape for over a decade thanks to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Heroes like Ant-Man and Rocket Raccoon, once consigned to dusty comic book store basements, are now household names.
The next part of the grand story, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever , on Nvoember 11, 2022. Marvel Champions brings some of that epic battle action home to your tabletop. This card game for one to four players let players team up against some of the most spectacular Marvel villains in an attempt to stop their dastardly schemes.
The core boks features four heroes to play but, as an expandable card game, there’s a whole multiverse of heroes and villains to play. How Do You Play Marvel Champions? Each player selects a deck to represent their hero with five available in the core box: Spider-Man, Iron Man, Black Panther, Captain Marvel and She-Hulk. The deck is full of their powers, allies and abilities but, in true Marvel style, there’s a weakness card that can come up at an inopportune time.
Spider-Man might have to deal with an untimely bill or T’Chala might be called away to some royal business in Wakanda. The players then choose a villain to take down together. Each villain has their own plot and plays against the players in a different way.
The core box includes Rhino, Klaw and Ultron, each one increasing the difficulty. Players take turns playing cards to empower themselves, thwart the bad guy’s plans and handle unexpected twists. The villian turn then complicated matters by revealing new enemies or forcing players to make hard decisions about discarding cards or resources.
The villains scale up or down based on the number of players. There are extra cards in the box for players who want to fine tune their decks.
The hero cards remain the same but players can mix in their own allies and events for a unique way to play. Marvel Champions Expansions Players who want a larger card pool can dig into the expansions. Each small expansion is centered around a hero or villain.
The larger expansions offer bigger storylines with new heroes, villains and mechanics. There are over 24 hero expansions that can be purchased individually. The heroes range from classics like Captain America and Hulk to newer favorites like Ms.
Marvel and Ironheart. There are also villain expansions for fans who want to go head to head with the nefarious likes of Green Goblin or Kang the Conqueror. Campaign boxes offer a larger storyline with both new heroes and villains to play.
Fans of Guardians of the Galaxy will want to pick up The Galaxy’s Most Wanted , while players who want to see if they can defeat Thanos will find him in The Mad Titan’s Shadow . Anyone looking for Miles Morales and Ghost Spider will find them with some of Spidey’s best villains in Sinister Motives . Mutant Genesis One area where Marvel Champions has a leg up on its Cinematic Universe sibling is that it’s already introduced mutants into the game.
The most recept campaign expansion, Mutant Genesis , pits Colossus and Shadowcat against some classic villains like Sabretooth, Sentinels, The Brotherhood and Magneto. This entire expansion wave is X-Men themed. Hero packs of Cyclops and Phoeniz are already out with Storm, Gambit and Wolverine decks due out soon.
A Mojo pack can also be added to confound our favorite mutants just like he does in the comics. My favorite part about Marvel Champions is that it brings Marvel fans together regardless of their media of choice. Old school comics fans and Cinematice Universe viewers can enjoy their favorite characters beating up some of the best bad guys out there.
