But it looks like a big one is not. Following the leak of multiple iPhone 15 specifications last week, respected analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has shot down talk of a major one: an upgraded eight-element (8P) primary camera. And this raises doubts about other upgrades in the leak.
Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max / Ultra concept based on leaks aliartist3d Kuo was responding to a leak by fellow analyst TrendForce, that claimed an 8P lens is coming to iPhone 15 models, along with a new periscope lens exclusively for the the flagship Pro Max/Ultra model, a jump to 8GB RAM and a “comprehensive” transition to USB-C. But Kuo said he believes that “the rumored iPhone 15 Pro series’s adoption of an 8P lens won’t likely come true. ” Kuo has not replied to requests from his circa-100,000 Twitter followers to comment on the other aspects of the TrendForce leak, but, given his excellent track record, it does call TrendForce’s information into question.
What does an 8P lens do? Increasing the number of elements in a lens enables wider apertures to be used. In turn, this increases the amount of light that can be gathered, which should lead to better pictures in all conditions. The downside is more elements means more complexity, and Apple only just moved to a 7P lens with the iPhone 14 Pro models.

On the flip side, Kuo has been wrong before, and the iPhone 15 lineup is still tipped to bring more innovation than has been seen in recent years, including dual front-facing cameras and a titanium chassis for Pro/Ultra models, the removal of volume and power ‘buttons’ for capacitive alternatives (codename ‘Bongo’) and a shift to USB-C. All these upgrades are expected to increase prices, but spread across the length of a 2-3 year carrier contract that is likely to do less harm than another year of underwhelming base models .
