Share to Facebook Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Developer communication in the Dota world continues to cause issues Credit: WePlay Esports Dota 2 developer Valve has announced, somewhat controversially, that Fantic has qualified to The International 11 ahead of Outsiders, despite community calculations putting Outsiders ahead of Fnatic in the standings. This past weekend saw the conclusion of the Dota 2 regular season, as Team Spirit won the Arlington Major. The Major was the last chance for teams to earn Dota Pro Circuit Points, with the top teams at the end of the event qualifying for The International 11 later this year.

Once the event concluded, almost all calculations made, including from the Dota 2 pro wiki Liquipedia, a source Valve itself has credited in the past, had Outsiders above Fnatic by a minuscule 0. 05 points, having 1020. 05 to Fnatic’s 1020.

While it was heartbreaking for Fnatic and the team’s fans to miss out on automatic TI qualification by such a small margin, from the point they were knocked out of the tournament everyone in the Dota scene thought Outsiders were guaranteed a slot at TI regardless of their performance. Outsiders would go on to lose their next match, thinking they had qualified, and missed out on extra DPC points. After the tournament finished some people noticed that the standings on the official Dota website didn’t match those on Liquipedia.

Notably, the Dota website does not feature partial points, only whole numbers, and this is where the issues started to appear. Despite not being made clear in the ruleset, the community discovered that in Valve’s calculations they rounded down points whenever they were applied, instead of at the end of the season. As a result, it meant that the multiple penalties Outsiders received for roster changes throughout the season dropped them down to a rounded 1019 points, one point less than Fnatic.

While there is no question that the mathematics behind the situation make sense, the controversy comes from two main points. The first being that the exact calculation method of the points was not part of the rulebook, and the second being that Valve only released this statement after the tournament, letting Outsiders play their final matches under the belief they had already qualified.

Had they known they needed to win to get in, there may have been a different result. But with Valve making this decision and releasing their statement there is basically no chance this will change, and you can expect to see Fnatic at TI, while Outsiders will have to qualify to the event through the regional qualifiers.
