Games How Will Netflix’s Real-Life ‘Squid Game’ Show Work, Exactly? Paul Tassi Senior Contributor Opinions expressed by Forbes Contributors are their own. News and opinion about video games, television, movies and the internet. Jun 15, 2022, 09:35am EDT | Share to Facebook Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Squid Game Netflix Netflix has announced something that seemed somewhat inevitable after getting into the reality competition genre for a few years now: they’re doing a real-life Squid Game.

Well, you know, to a point. While no one will be murdered in Netflix’s Squid Game show (probably?) it does raise a few different questions. A lot of people are focused on the irony of the core message of Squid Game being about capitalism and greed and wealth inequality, and now 456 people will compete for $4.

56 million in an actual version of the game from the show. I mean, they’re not dying for the chance, but I’m not sure the takeaway from the series was supposed to be “oh well this looks like fun!” Here’s what Netflix is saying: “Squid Game took the world by storm with Director Hwang’s captivating story and iconic imagery. We’re grateful for his support as we turn the fictional world into reality in this massive competition and social experiment,” said Brandon Riegg, Netflix VP of Unscripted and Documentary Series.

“Fans of the drama series are in for a fascinating and unpredictable journey as our 456 real world contestants navigate the biggest competition series ever, full of tension and twists, with the biggest ever cash prize at the end. ” Okay, fine, but I have more questions. Namely, I cannot think of any of the existing Squid Game games that we got in the show itself that would translate into interesting non-lethal versions for a game show.

We have: Squid Game Netflix MORE FOR YOU ‘Demon Slayer’ Season 2 Finally Has An Actual 2021 Release Date Netflix’s ‘Squid Game’ Season 2 Not A Sure Thing, Says Director ‘Genshin Impact’ Still Refuses To Increase Anniversary Rewards, Despite Fan Outcry Round 1: Red Light, Green Light – I cannot imagine Netflix has the mechanical capabilities to accurately gauge which of 456 players are moving slightly and then immediately shoot them with paintballs or something to knock them out. Also no one is going to running away in fear like they were on the show. Round 2: Dalgona/Ppopgi – This was where you cut out the shapes of the cookies, which is a pretty iconic Squid Game game, and yet without the fear of being shot, I’m not sure this is exactly going to be terribly compelling TV.

Round 3: Tug Of War – So tug of war where you just…fall into a foam pit if you lose, I guess? Perhaps the interesting part here would be the strategies of getting strong people on your team. But I mean fundamentally it’s. .

. tug of war. Not that thrilling.

Squid Game Netflix Round 4: Marbles – While this was easily one of the best episodes of the entire series, and the most compelling game, again, it’s something I cannot imagine would translate into an actual TV series. Does not seem like a game like this would make the cut. Round 5: Glass Tiles – So maybe it wouldn’t be shattering glass, but I don’t know, trick platforms or something.

But again, you just fall into foam, and the main part of why this game worked on the show is that they didn’t know what they were doing when they started, so obviously the people in the back were at a massive advantage and those in front were totally screwed. That wouldn’t be remotely fair in a real competition show. Squid Game Netflix Final Round: Squid Game – I mean, are we really going to watch two finalists play the literal Squid Game game for the last thing? While it worked given the relationship between the two leads, yet another example of stakes that wouldn’t translate.

So far, Netflix has not indicated what games the show will do, and I feel like this is mainly going to be about the aesthetic as you know they’ll have the big doll girl and guys with the symbol masks and stuff. But will it be any more interesting or entertaining than say, Ninja Warrior or MXC? I really doubt it. Follow me on Twitter , YouTube , Facebook and Instagram .
