THE CULTURAL and historical wealth of India, when thoughtfully harnessed, has the potential to change the course of the world, as was noted by Dean Dr Dipak C Jain who was addressing hospitality industry professionals at the 7th BW Hotelier Indian Hospitality Summit & Awards 2023. As the former Dean of the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University in Illinois, USA, and the co-chair of the Academic Council of China Europe International Business School (CEIBS), his words sparked a flame of inspiration, illuminating a path where India could rise as a global leader in hospitality and ageing wellness. One of India’s most significant opportunities lies in its burgeoning ageing population, a demography often referred to as the “silver generation”.

This group possesses the trifecta of assets: time, money and passion. Dr Dipak C Jain suggested that India can harness this demographic to reposition itself as a hub for healthy ageing, offering innovative programmes and services to cater to the evolving needs and desires of senior citizens. “One of the most significant shifts is the ageing of the global population, with more people over 65 years of age.

The implications of this inclination extend to the hospitality industry, as elderly care becomes more critical than childcare,” he added. However, he went beyond the obvious, urging us to see infrastructure development not as a hindrance but as a catalyst for acceptance, integrity and resourceful thinking. The focus, he said, should be on optimising existing resources and recognising the potential for growth within the given parameters.

“India’s hospitable nature, its ability to make visitors feel at home and its world-famous guest-centric culture can serve as strong foundations for building a thriving hospitality industry. Hospitality goes beyond mere infrastructure; it is embedded in the very genes of the Indian populace,” highlighted Dr Jain. India, with its diverse landscape and rich cultural heritage, has the potential to offer transformative experiences, merging ancient traditions with contemporary needs.

The tapestry of India, adorned with historical landmarks and natural beauty, can provide the canvas upon which new paradigms of wellness and hospitality are painted. Collaboration and alliances with leading institutions in countries that excel in the hospitality and wellness sectors are India’s stepping stones to global prominence. Dr Jain reminded us that in this modern era, cooperation is the key.

By channelling advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) and other technological resources, India can propel itself to the forefront of the global hospitality and wellness industry. He also emphasised that India’s inherent attributes, combined with strategic development, can pave the way for the nation to become a world leader in providing transformative experiences and services.
