As part of her “Happier Than Ever” world tour, multiple Grammy winner Billie Eilish put on a high-energy set to over 25,000 enthusiastic fans at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium on the evening of August 18, 2022. On the night, the 20-year-old singer performed over 20 songs from her catalog, including hits like Bad Guy , Bellyache , NDA , and When The Party’s Over . For many Malaysian Eilish diehards, the concert was nothing less than a dream come true.
But for quite a lot of others at the event, perhaps not so much – not due to any fault of the performer, mind you, but mostly due to the way the seats at the stadium were planned out. No doubt, those who attended the concert had to fork out a significant amount of money to see one of the world’s hottest artistes today, with prices for tickets starting from RM308 (US$68. 80) furthest from the stage, going all the way up to RM598 (US$133.
60) for a place in the standing area right before the stage. For reference, here’s the full list of ticket prices and respective seating positions at the stadium. But the problem concert-goers had wasn’t so much to do with the price, but how the arrangement of the seated areas in the stadium had put such a massive distance between the stage and the audience.
To see what I mean, here’s a couple of photos by Twitter users who were at the concert: Not gonna lie, those are pretty sad to look at, and tt almost seems like there’s a whole football field’s worth of empty space between the seated areas and the main stage. Unsurprisingly, many who took up the seated positions (CAT 2 to CAT 4) had plenty to say about the situation on social media. Expectation vs Reality:- pic.

com/97gdLhpguI “Those who bought CAT2 tickets must be kicking themselves hard considering that the difference in price isn’t that much compared to CAT1 (standing), but the difference in distance is like that of the Earth and the sky,” said one Twitter user. Beyond lamenting the distance between the performance and the seats, many were pretty vocal about the organizer’s decisions when it came to planning the layout of the concert. Some worried that other major artistes thinking about stopping by Malaysia might even be put off by the poor planning as a result.
Tapi sebenarnya, they set up the stage too far kebelakang. Concerts before this ok je dekat Bukit Jalil. Idk if they expected to fit MORE in the pit ke macam mana but this is clearly salah organiser.

Take for example this photo of the Paramore live concert in 2010, where the main stage was placed much, much closer to where fans were seated.
There were some who questioned whether or not the Bukit Jalil National Stadium was even the best place to hold a concert in the first place, considering that the Axiata Arena (which has held quite a few major events in the past) was just around the corner, and boasted a setup way more conducive for a live music event. com/dIO14WgOua For those wondering, the Axiata Arena has played host to big names such as Ed Sheeran, K-Pop legends Big Bang, and R&B icon Alicia Keys. Observing the backlash from the Billie Eilish concert, quite a number of netizens expressed their worry about other musical guests taking the stage at the stadium, especially with the likes of Justin Bieber and BLACKPINK still slated to grace the Bukit Jalil National Stadium within the next year. Hopefully, the organizers will have come up with better solutions for seating by then.
