Share to Facebook Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Here’s everything we know about August’s free PlayStation Plus lineup. Credit: Sony Surprisingly, as of this writing there have been no leaks for August’s PS Plus lineup, despite the July games leaking several days before Sony’s reveal last month. Things have gotten a bit more complicated with PlayStation Plus in general ever since the June launch of two new tiers of content—PS Plus Extra and Premium.
These tiers cost more than the Essential tier (which is the basic tier we all had originally) but also give you way more games, including games from past console generations and some streaming titles (all PS3 titles are streaming). I wrote recently about how the new hit indie cyberpunk cat RPG Stray was released on PS Plus Extra and Premium, and how it probably means that games like that will only be released on these tiers in the future, meaning we might have to slightly lower our expectations for PS Plus Essential. What that means for this piece in particular is that I need to rethink how I predict what games we might get in the Essential tier now that Extra and Premium are more likely to get the best releases.
In the past, I might have guessed something like The Witcher 3 for August’s PS Plus releases, but I’m willing to bet that game only ever comes to Extra/Premium at this point. Ironically, this may lower the value of PS Plus Essential, while providing a much better product at Extra and above. In any case, given that at this point there are no leaks or rumors (I will add these to the post if they do pop up before Sony makes the official announcement) all we can do is make predictions and a wish-list for next month’s games.
Sony will reveal the official lineup of PS Plus Essential games this Wednesday morning. They will go live next Tuesday, August 2nd. Two weeks later, Sony will release a second wave of PS Plus Extra/Premium games in a mid-month refresh.

We’ll keep these to the Essential games that come out first and do a separate post for the Extra/Premium in August. PS Plus August Predictions These are predictions for many different games that could be combined into one trio of releases, by the way. I’m not suggesting that all of these would make the cut.
Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019) because the sequel comes out in just a couple months and Activision would enjoy extra hype if this were a freebie. It’s far enough away from the late-October release that it won’t step on the newer title’s toes. Sackboy: A Big Adventure because it’s a PS5 title that’s been out for a while and still hasn’t made its way to PS Plus, but it’s not such a huge draw that it would necessitate landing at the Extra level instead.
Marvel’s Spider-Man because it’s a great PS4 game that would make a lot of gamers really happy. Immortals: Fenix Rising because it’s a great little action-RPG that more people need to play but again, not from a popular franchise like Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed games. Frogun because it’s a new indie game that comes out on Tuesday, August 2nd when PlayStation Plus games go live for the month.
The stars align. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice because it would ride on the very long coattails of Elden Ring and give PlayStation gamers something excellent and extraordinarily challenging to ease them into the busy holiday months. Hot Wheels Unleashed because I need variety in this list and a racing game or some kind of simulation game—perhaps Lawn Mowing Simulator which will be going live on the Epic Game Store soon also—fits that bill.
Those are just some possible guesses. What do you think or hope we’ll get this coming month on the PS Plus Essential tier? Let me know on Twitter or Facebook . The official announcement from Sony should come soon enough on Wednesday July 27 at 8:30 AM PST / 11:30 AM EST / 4:30 PM BST.
