It’s no secret that Singapore has a pretty extensive and grueling National Service (NS) program, where male citizens and permanent residents are made to undergo a mandatory two-year service period in one of the country’s uniformed bodies. But just last week, the general public got a good view of just how fit these NS recruits were after a bunch of photos were shared to the Singapore Armed Forces Basic Military Training Center (SAF BMTC)’s Facebook page – all showing a bunch of seriously ripped NS-men undergoing training and recreational activities. “Pull your spirits up for the weekend!” said the caption on one post, which included photos of recruits doing pull-ups.

“Apart from keeping fit from physical training and exercises in BMTC, our recruits also engage in team sports and games, fostering camaraderie and unity between soldiers and their commanders,” said another post in which the cadets were shown playing sports together. Unsurprisingly, these photos immediately got people talking, with tons of commenters in awe of the physical condition of these recruits. Some were so impressed that a post was made on the SingaporeRaw subreddit asking what these dudes were being fed.

“Compound V,” one joked – alluding to the serum used to turn humans into super-humans in the TV series The Boys , while others guessed things like creatine, protein powder, and all sorts of things used to beef up a body. But the more plausible answer as it turns out, was the standard cookhouse food, which doesn’t seem too shabby by the look of things. For those not familiar with how the Singaporean National Service program works, all males in the country (citizens and second-generation permanent residents) are mandated by the government to serve for two years under one of either the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF), Singapore Police Force (SPF), or Singapore Civil Defense Force (SCDF).

This typically occurs sometime after completing high school at the age of 18, and before the commencement of their tertiary education or working lives. The NS program has been in place since the country’s independence, and has been positioned as one of the necessary defense pillars of the country, owing to the small land and population size of Singapore. “Our servicemen’s roles have also expanded.

Beyond protecting Singapore from armed conflicts, our servicemen are now involved in countering terrorism, dealing with the aftermath of natural disasters, and tackling health epidemics,” explained the official NS website. Following the mandatory two-year service period, Singaporean males will become registered as Operationally Ready National Servicemen (NSmen), with obligations ending at the age of 40, or 50 for officers or those with special technical expertise. At the end of the day, it does seem as though the Singaporean NS program takes the fitness of its trainees very seriously, even if some of the photos posted up may seem like a huge flex.

But then again, wouldn’t you as a Singaporean feel more at peace knowing that you’ve got so many incredibly fit dudes to keep the country safe if anything untoward were to happen? (Touch wood!)
