One issue the show has had with its gaps between seasons, especially the very long one between season 3 and 4 due to COVID, is that its young cast has grown up very fast. As such, the Duffer Brothers have told TVLine that season 5 is almost certainly going to have a time jump forward. “I’m sure we will do a time jump,” said Ross Duffer.
“Ideally, we’d have shot [Seasons 4 and 5] back to back, but there was just no feasible way to do that. ” We have this current split within season 4 because they couldn’t quite finish production on the final, VFX-filled episode for one giant binge drop, so it’s not shocking they could also not film an entirely new season back to back with season 4. How far of a time jump remains unclear.
What’s happening in Hawkins does seem somewhat urgent, so there would have to be some sort of explanation as to why everything just…stopped for a few years, if that’s how long they’re planning. But at a certain point, yes, they do have to catch up to the fact that the kids who started out starring in the series are now six years older, given that we are a far cry from 2016 when the show originally aired. The current ages of the main cast members show how much they’ve aged out of the original set-up.
Granted, this is Hollywood and older actors play younger all the time, but still: BROOKLYN, NEW YORK – MAY 14: (L-R) David Harbour, Caleb Mclaughlin, Millie Bobby Brown, Finn . . .

Again, not all that wild for Hollywood, but most of these kids really look their age now.
Does that mean a college-based season of Stranger Things is coming for season 5? I would kind of doubt that, given that there’s probably too much chaos to weave a significant amount of college-based storylines in there. My guess is they may skip ahead to high school graduation, which would be a couple of years, but we just don’t know yet. We also don’t know any dates for Stranger Things season 5.
In the same interview the Duffer Brothers don’t even seem to know yet when season 5 will begin filming, and the show is clearly not on a regimented “every year a new season” schedule at this point. The earliest it seems like Stranger Things season 5 would get here is probably late 2023, but we’ll have to see. Follow me on Twitter , YouTube , Facebook and Instagram .
