Allway The Allway OE10 open earbuds have launched on Kickstarter with the claim that they are the most affordable open earbuds on the market. Made by Allway, the brand-new OE10 open headphones use a new listening design that offers open-style listening without the need to put ear tips in the listener’s ears and are more like a miniature speaker that sits just outside the ear. I have had the chance to listen to a pair and here’s my lowdown on the product.

The OE10 earbuds fit over the ear and can be adjusted until the speakers align with the listener’s ear opening. This setup leaves the user’s ears completely open, so they are always aware of their surroundings, making them an ideal choice for running and exercising. The ear hook can be rotated through 30° for a more comfortable fit, making them ideal for extended listening sessions or anyone who can’t get on with in-ear models.

Unlike the TWS headphones with a semi-in-ear design, which can generate pressure inside the ear canal, these earphones can be worn for long periods. Unlike other open-ear designs, such as bone-conducting headsets, the Allway OE10 uses Open Audio directional sound to deliver the music through the air for a more natural listening experience. Allway has developed bass enhancement technology into the OE10s for a rich and full sound that it claims exceeds the standard of similar products in the market.

Thanks to the latest Bluetooth version 5. 3, these earphones support Multipoint connectivity, which means they can be connected to two devices at once, enabling audio to be switched easily between two devices in real-time. Alternatively, you can listen to music from one device while accepting calls from another, switching automatically between the two.

The chipset used in the OE10 offers support for the AAC audio codec used in iOS and Android devices, as well as the basic SBC protocol. There’s also the free Allway smartphone app for customizing operations using iOS or Android. These earphones are like a miniature pair of loudspeakers.

The Allway OE10 are a highly efficient pair of micro loudspeakers that sit just at the opening of the listener’s ears. The sound quality is surprisingly good and the benefit is you are always aware of your surroundings. This makes the OE10 ideal for safety-critical situations, such as jogging on a busy road.

There is a certain amount of sound spillage from the earphones because of their open design, but it wasn’t as much as I had feared. The build quality feels good and the storage/charging case is a fabric-covered and zippered design that would look great in anyone’s sports bag. If the concept of open earphones appeals, look at the Allway OE10 as they are a good deal cheaper than the equivalent from Bose, Sony or Cleer.
