We tried 7-Eleven’s new Lingham’s Flaming Choco Soft Serve so you don’t have to

If you’re a soft-serve aficionado like I am, you probably keep up with the social media accounts of various convenience stores like FamilyMart, 7-Eleven, MyNews, and more. An outsider might ask, “But why, though?”. It’s because, if you’re in Malaysia at least, these convenience stores tend to sell soft serve that taste just so damn good (no this isn’t sponsored, but FamilyMart, 7-Eleven, and the rest – you are more than welcome to give us your money!), without breaking the bank.

Recently, 7-Eleven Malaysia announced a new soft serve kid on the block – something so strange and unique, yet truly Malaysian – the Flaming Choco Soft Serve, infused with Malaysia’s very own Lingham’s Extra Hot chili sauce. Available for a limited time at 7CAFé outlets (a 7-Eleven with a café concept, where food is made to order) only. So naturally, I had to leave the relative comfort of my home and try it out for myself.

Here’s what you should know before giving it a taste. This is one of the ads run by 7-Eleven Malaysia , announcing the Flaming Choco Soft Serve: A post shared by 7-Eleven Malaysia (@7elevenmalaysia) In reality, however (or at least, what I got from the 7CAFé in Taman Tun Dr. Ismail, Kuala Lumpur), you’ll be met with something that looks like an innocent chocolate soft serve, without the fancy ‘chili sauce dressing’ that you see in the ad.

Take a look for yourself: To say I wasn’t at least slightly disappointed not to see my soft serve slathered with Lingham’s Extra Hot chili sauce would be a lie. Confused, I asked the 7CAFé cashier about what happened to the sauce that’s so prominently displayed in their advertising material, and she revealed that it was already infused in the soft serve mix itself, telling me I’ll definitely feel the burn. But you know what? It’s the taste that counts – and taste it, I definitely did.

Like any soft serve, the initial mouthful was extremely refreshing, especially after the 20-minute walk I had to endure under the blazing sun just to get to the 7CAFé in my neighborhood (parking is a real scarcity). But like a cunning ninja, the burn from the infused Lingham’s Extra Hot slowly (but very surely) creeps up on you. I probably looked like a strange man smiling at my soft serve cone out in public.

It was a good burn, just enough to make me realize I can actually feel pain in this soulless shell I call my body. The coldness of the soft serve lulls you into a false sense of security – you go in thinking its cool temperature will help stave off that heat, but the more you eat, the more it burns. Very, very smart.

As for how my body will handle it later tonight, I’ll update you if anything happens. For just RM2. 90, you should definitely give it a go yourself, especially if you like burning your throat.

You’ll be able to find the Flaming Choco Soft Serve at any 7CAFé in the Klang Valley.
