2 vehicles stopped on road to help crash victim near Dunseith hit by another car

DUNSEITH, ND — Two vehicles that stopped on the road to help a semi driver after crashing were involved in another crash with a fourth vehicle 12 miles south of Dunseith, North Dakota on Thursday, Jan. 4. Llyod Simcock, a 70-year-old man from Woodlands, Manitoba, was driving his Mack Truck semi southbound on Highway 3 at 3:30 a.

m. when the vehicle veered right and left the roadway, according to a report from the North Dakota Highway Patrol. The semi then went vaulting off an approach, coming to a stop in the west ditch near mile marker 222, according to a release Simcock was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the incident, the report said, and he sustained serious, but non life-threatening injuries in the crash.

A Ford Mustang driven by 43-year-old Brian Bradford from Dunseith, stopped in the southbound lane, pointing his vehicle’s headlights towards the semi in the ditch.

Meanwhile Rory Frederick, a 22-year-old man from Belcourt, stopped his Chevy Silverado nearby. He parked partially in the northbound lane, the release said. ADVERTISEMENT Both drivers exited their respective vehicles to help the injured driver.

Shortly afterwards, a Ford Taurus, driven by 43-year-old Steven Johnson of Rolla, struck the parked Silverado while he was headed northbound, according to the report. The rear-end altercation rotated Johnson’s Taurus, pushing him into the parked Mustang. Both the Silverado and Mustang were unoccupied during the crash, the report added.

Neither Johnson or his passenger, 27-year-old Corey Poitra from Dunseith, were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash. Both men sustained minor injuries and were transported to nearby hospitals alongside Simcock. Bradford and Frederick were not injured.

The crashes remain under investigation by highway patrol, including any potential charges.
