Centre invested over Rs 3.45 lakh crore in Northeast in past 8 years: Ministry of Home Affairs

NEW DELHI: Circa 2023 was a watershed year for the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), as many landmark strides were made towards fulfilling Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a safe, secure, inclusive, and Aatmanirbhar Bharat. The Government of India has invested more than Rs 3. 45 lakh crore in the last eight years to make the Northeast a hub of development, connectivity, infrastructure, sports, investment, and organic agriculture.

Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah inaugurated and laid the foundation stone of 21 development projects worth Rs. 1,311 crore at Moirang, Manipur, on January 6, 2023. The Government of India has once again decided to reduce the disturbed areas in Nagaland, Assam, and Manipur under the Armed Forces Special Powers Act ( AFSPA ) (March 25, 2023).

Compared to the year 2014, there is a reduction of 76 percent in extremist incidents in the year 2022. Similarly, the deaths of security personnel and civilians have come down by 90 percent and 97 percent, respectively, during this period. With PM-DevINE, the government has increased the budget for the Northeast by 276 percent.

A historic agreement to settle the long-pending border dispute between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh was signed in the presence of Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah in New Delhi on April 20, 2023. The final agreement with respect to the over 700-kilometre-long border between the two states will be final, and neither of the states will make any new claims in the future relating to any area or village. A tripartite Memorandum of Settlement between the Government of India, the Government of Assam, and representatives of the Dimasa National Liberation Army/Dimasa Peoples’ Supreme Council (DNLA/DPSC) was signed in New Delhi on April 27, 2023.

Under the agreement, the Dimasa Welfare Council will be set up by the Government of Assam to protect, preserve, and promote social, cultural, and linguistic identity to meet political, economic, and educational aspirations and will ensure the speedy and focused development of the Dimasa people residing outside the jurisdiction of the Autonomous Council. The Union Home Minister laid the foundation stone for the Guwahati campus of the National Forensic Science University (NFSU) in Assam on May 25, 2023. FSU-Guwahati will benefit the Northeast as well as many countries along the eastern border, like Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, Myanmar, and Indonesia.

In the presence of Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah, a Memorandum of Settlement was signed between the Government of India, the Government of Assam, and representatives of the United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) in New Delhi on December 29, 2023. The agreement is a significant milestone in fulfilling Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s vision of a peaceful, prosperous, and insurgency-free Northeast and bringing everlasting peace, prosperity, and all-round development to Assam. From January 2023 to November 2023, the following progress has been made in the border infrastructure on the international border: Construction of Border Roads completed: 184.
