Synopsis Modi mentioned about Opposition leader Siddaramaiah’s recent comment that the “Lingayat CMs were corrupt,” though he did not take his name, while refusing to acknowledge the former CM’s clarification he never meant any offence to Lingayats, but his remarks were targeted only at chief minister Basavaraj Bommai. ANI Modi addresses a public meeting ahead of Karnataka assembly elections, in Belagavi. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday targeted the Congress, referring to its recent comments about Lingayat leaders as “corrupt,” seeking to drive the community voters away from the Opposition in the Karnataka assembly polls scheduled for May 10.

Modi mentioned about Opposition leader Siddaramaiah’s recent comment that the “Lingayat CMs were corrupt,” though he did not take his name, while refusing to acknowledge the former CM’s clarification he never meant any offence to Lingayats, but his remarks were targeted only at chief minister Basavaraj Bommai. “Senior leaders in the Congress make such comments,” he said, commenting on the controversy, adding that the party similarly insulted Dr BR Ambedkar and Vir Savarkar in the past. “Bhagwan Basaveshwara showed a way to help others.

His teachings are the inspiration behind ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas, Sabka Prayas,” Modi said. The 12 century social reformer is the most revered religious figure of Lingayats. The BJP and Congress are snapping at each other, accusing each other of short-changing Lingayats, the politically influential dominant community that is estimated to make up about 17% of the state’s population.

The PM addressed party rallies at Humnabad in Bidar district, Vijayapura and Kudachi in Belagavi district, and at each of these places sought to connect with voters by praising local traditions and heroes. At Bidar and Vijayapura districts, he described the first as the “karma bhumi” and the second as “Janma Bhumi ” of Basavanna. He reminded the voters in Vijayapura district that it took the BJP government to meet their decades long demand for title-deeds for the Banjara (SC) community, recognising their habitations (thandas) as revenue villages.

“I could see a new self-confidence in them,” said Modi, who flew down to Kalaburgi in January to personally kick off distribution of title-deeds to more than 50,000 families the community living in 1,475 habitations in Kalaburagi, Yadgiri, Raichur, Bidar and Vijayapura districts. At the last rally in a region bordering Maharashtra, he said, “BJP is the world’s largest party today, and Belagavi has an immense contribution to it. The people of Belagavi have helped grow this.

” The PM urged voters not to repeat the mandate of 2018 assembly polls and sought absolute majority for the BJP. The broken mandate led to the JDS-Congress coalition regime “wasting time” to save the regime while the political instability shattered the future of the state’s youth. “Because of political instability, a state like Karnataka, endowed with such great tradition and a young generation has suffered.

” ABUSED 91 TIMES In an obvious reference to AICC president Mallikarjuna Kharge’s recent description of him as a “venomous snake”, Modi said the Congress had once again started abusing him. “Until now the Congress has abused me 91 times. ” The party’s condition, he said, would not have been this pathetic “had the leaders spent this time in delivering good governance and taking care of workers instead of creating this dictionary of abuses.

” Modi took a dig at Siddaramaiah saying that the Congress party was seeking votes in the name of retirement. The former CM, a strong contender for the CM’s post had earlier announced that this would be his last election. Don’t miss out on ET Prime stories!
