Evil Genius Games The long history of Dungeons & Dragons includes several off-shoots and systems inspired by the game. One of the most well-regarded spin-offs by fans and game designers is D20 Modern , released in 2006 during the third edition era of D&D. It carried the flexible character design of D&D Third Edition forward while also adding in modern rules for things like firearms and computer hacking. (Fun fact: the world that eventually became the basis for The Expanse started out as a setting for the author’s D20 Modern tabletop campaign!) Now, Evil Genius Games is hoping to recapture that magic with a Kickstarter for Everyday Heroes . It’s framing the game as a spiritual sucessor to D20 Modern by combining the original’s flexibility and innovations with the massively popular fifth edition of D&D. The company has brought back some of the original design team, such as Jeff Grubb and Stan!, to work their magic once again. Dungeons & Dragons & Modern Machine Guns Base classes focus on the strongest trait of the character: are they strong, agile, tough, wise, smart or charismatic? A second class then defines the character further, so a Tough character that’s a Bodyguard plays differently than a Tough character that’s a Scrapper. Finally, characters choose a background and profession that defines more skills and special abilities. The game offers some interesting takes on D&D rules. Instead of magic, for example, Smart characters have access to Plans that they can use to reflect the classic reveal of a mastermind luring an opponent into a trap. Multi-classing is handled by feats which allow characters to dip into abilities outside their class list. A Season Pass of Cinematic Adventures Everyday Heroes hopes to bring movie action to tabletops everywhere. It’s already got additional books planned with more weapons, gadgets and gear. It’s also hoping to lure movie buffs into the world of gaming through a series of Cinematic Adventures. The Cinematic Adventures reflect media companies widening understanding of how role-playing games a a way to promote their properties. Companies are looking beyond traditional game licenses to appeal to new fan bases. If the 2023 line is successful, Evil Genius Games expected to offer a new slate of licensees in 2024.
