Consumer Tech New Apple Leak Doubles Down On iPhone 14 Design Shock Gordon Kelly Senior Contributor Opinions expressed by Forbes Contributors are their own. I write about technology’s biggest companies May 21, 2022, 05:24am EDT | Share to Facebook Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Apple’s iPhone 14 range is going to feel like two different generations of smartphone . Now a new report has doubled down on concerning claims of how Apple will try and trick users into thinking they have a better deal than they will get. In a new blog post on iDropNews , industry insider LeaksApplePro warns that Apple is going to rebadge old components to make iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max buyers think they are new. He had previously said that Apple was considering this back in March. Apple 14 Pro Max render based on multiple leaks EverythingApplePro “The iPhone 14 will be disappointing for some people in many ways,” argues the leaker. “For starters, it will look identical to the iPhone 13. That’s right, even if you were to put those devices next to each other, you wouldn’t notice the difference unless you went into its settings.” And here’s the kicker: “It’ll have the [2021] A15 processor, although my sources suggest this chip could receive the A16 name.” Meanwhile, the actual A16 chip used in iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max models “may be called ‘A16 Pro’.” If correct, this is a risky path for Apple to go down. Yes, Apple chipsets have long carried meaningless names like ‘Fusion’ and ‘Bionic’ (which the company has previously admitted are marketing nonsense ) but this is different. A-Series chipset numbers have always applied to new generations. The A15 chip in the current Pro models has 6GB RAM versus 4GB in the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Mini, but that doesn’t change the fact both chips are currently marketed as ‘A15’. Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max renders based on leaked schematics EverythingApplePro There is one consolation. The leaker states that iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max prices will be $799 and $899. The former is in line with the iPhone 13 and while the latter is $200 more than the iPhone 13 Mini, when there were fears it could be higher . But, once again, it is the iPhone 14 Pro range which stands out. Pro models will get an exclusive new design , massive camera upgrades and LeaksApplePro also reveals that Apple is considering doubling their entry-level storage to 256GB. That said, buying any iPhone 14 model is increasingly looking like a gamble. Multiple credible sources now claim Apple will switch iPhones from Lightning to USB-C ports in 2023 , a move which would kill second hand values for older models using Lightning. And with standard iPhones finally joining the redesign party next year , all but the most committed of Apple fans would be wise to hold off their upgrades and see how this plays out. ___ Follow Gordon on Facebook More on Forbes MORE FROM FORBES Apple Insiders Claim USB-C Coming To iPhones In 2023 By Gordon Kelly Gordon Kelly Editorial Standards Print Reprints & Permissions
